Although based on the 2018 Honda Ridgeline, the 2018 Honda Open Air Vehicle Concept is significantly different from it. First of all, the upgrade is completely new. Also, the interior elements differ significantly. Obviously, an extremely interesting concept. The official presentation was recently at the 2018 Specialty Equipment Market Association (2018 SEMA), in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to some sources, Honda has not planned the serial production of this model. Nevertheless, we hope to see it in 2020, and maybe even earlier. In any case, this concept provokes other field vehicle manufacturers. First of all, we mean Nissan and Toyota. However, like something between Ridgeline and Pioneer 1000, more targets for the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and the Ford Raptor.
There is a lot of similarities with the Honda Pioneer 1000, but it’s also significantly higher with a more pickup-like, based the Baja runner. The upper part is just a roll cage, and in place of windows has protective nets. Sports seats are borrowed from the Civic Type R, while the steering wheel by Pioneer 1000. Instead of the infotainment screen, fitted a smartphone, as well as four-point harnesses.
Technical characteristics are not known, but body and suspension is modified Ridgeline. Interestingly, interior has a full weatherproofing for the outdoor elements. Also, modified the bed and tailgate, and noticeable are skid plates and cladding. Of course, the weight will be much smaller. It is available with four doors, designed to accommodate four passengers. Placed at the huge black alloy wheels, with 33-inch all-terrain tires.
Unlike Ridgeline, it is unlikely to have a drive on the front wheels. Simply put, the drive is all-wheel, combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Although not officially confirmed, we are expecting the current 3.5-liter V6 gasoline turbocharged engine. The production of this engine is 280 hp and 262 lb-ft (355 Nm) of torque. We remind, the standard model has a fuel consumption of 18/25/21 mpg.
If yet in production, we expect that the price of the 2018 Honda Open Air Vehicle Concept will not deviate much from the standard Ridgeline model. However, we need to wait for new information from Honda Motor Company.
